With its distinctive shape and location in the sky, it’s no surprise that Capricorn gets a lot of attention. However, some people know very little about this sign of the zodiac, or why it’s so important to astrologers around the world. In this article, we will explore just what makes this constellation so special among the many others that make up our night sky.
The History of Capricorn
The constellation Capricornus is one of 12 constellations that define what is known as a zodiac. It is located in between Aquarius and Sagittarius, just south of center on the celestial sphere. Its name comes from Latin and refers to a male goat. Its astrological significance isn’t nearly as old, however; it was first recorded by Ptolemy in roughly 150 AD. In fact, there are some who believe that Capricornus actually represents two separate animals—the goat Amaltheia and its baby. When you look at the night sky, you can see why they might think so—it has been depicted with either one or two horns for centuries now. The brightest star within its borders is named Algedi (which means goat). If you ever happen to see it with your naked eye, know that it is about 80 light years away from Earth.
As far as constellations go, it is relatively dim, but there are several interesting things about it. For example, if you were to compare it with other similar-sized constellations like Gemini or Taurus, you would find that Capricornus has many fewer stars than either one. However, if we were to compare its brightness per square degree (known as luminosity), we would find that Capricornus beats both Taurus and Gemini hands down! Although there are no Messier objects in Capricornus, it does have an open cluster called NGC 6802. It is also home to a few galaxies including NGC 6838 and IC 4725. Overall, though, Capricornus is fairly unremarkable when compared with other constellations. It doesn’t contain any bright nebulae or deep space objects, nor does it have any notable meteor showers associated with it. There aren’t even any planets that reside within its borders—not even Pluto! So, what makes Capricornus special? Well, if you ask me, I would say that it is special because of how ordinary it is.
The Symbolism and Meaning
The constellation of Capricorn is based on a goat, which holds a fish in its mouth as it climbs up a mountain. The fish represents spirituality, while Capricorn’s climb to get it symbolizes our journey toward higher knowledge. People born under Capricorns influence are ambitious and goal-oriented, and they often rise to power thanks to their determination, perseverance and leadership qualities. Many famous people have been born with Capricorn rising, including Beyoncé, Marilyn Monroe and Abraham Lincoln. The Mythology: According to Greek mythology, Zeus was so impressed by Pan’s musical abilities that he placed him among the stars after his death. Pan had originally been one of several god figures who were associated with agriculture or other activities related to farming; eventually he became known as a god who protected shepherds and travelers from wild animals. In addition to being depicted as half-man and half-goat, Pan was also sometimes shown with horns. Although he has no connection to astrology, Pan was often depicted alongside Aphrodite (Venus) because of his association with beauty and love. The Astrological Association: People born between December 22 and January 19 fall under Capricorn’s influence. Because of their pragmatic nature, Capricorns are organized, determined and hardworking. They also value material possessions more than most signs—although that doesn’t mean they aren’t generous or charitable. If you know someone who falls under Capricorn’s influence, you might notice them working harder than usual during certain seasons of the year. For example, many Capricorns find themselves taking on extra responsibilities at work around tax time.
The Gift(s) Each Capricorn Has Received
Honesty, Determination, Leadership, Inquisitiveness and Persistence. Capricorns are very strong-willed individuals who use their determination to accomplish whatever task they set out for themselves. There is no doubt that Capricorns possess a great deal of leadership skills as well. They are very good at delegating responsibilities and tasks among those in their charge; however, it is important to note that these people do not like being told what to do by others. If you want something done right, ask a Capricorn! They will be able to tell you exactly what needs doing and how best to go about accomplishing it. As far as inquisitive nature goes, no other sign can compare with them! It’s almost as if they have an internal radar that alerts them when someone else has a question or problem. And finally, there is persistence. It’s simply impossible to keep up with a Capricorn if you’re trying to get away from him or her! These people just won’t quit until they get answers or complete whatever task was asked of them. That’s why so many Capricorns become successful business owners. You know that once you hire one of these folks, he or she is going to work tirelessly until your business goals have been reached!
